In an effort to provide our clients with the widest variety of options and efficiencies in applying for registration of marks in the U.S., K&K is among an increasing number of firms who opt to file applications electronically over the web using the PTO's TEAS system as well as through the traditional means. Now out of the pilot stage and fully operational, electronic filing is the first step in the PTO's migration to an increasingly paperless operation.

After several years of sorting out significant issues, such as submission of drawings and specimens, as well as "electronic signatures " , the PTO now receives as many as 20% of new applications electronically. In addition to applications, the PTO also accepts many other filings by electronic submission, such as Statements of Use, and extension requests, with more such forms due to be accepted soon.

This translates into numerous benefits for clients, such as quicker submission of applications and filing receipts, and (it is hoped by the PTO) faster prosecution time overall. There is also less possibility for human error in the processing, since the PTO database contains filing information exactly as submitted by an applicant or attorney without the need to be entered into electronic format by PTO personnel. (All paper submissions since April 1999 have been captured as an electronic image in the PTO database.)

Still, there are some situations where you may still prefer traditional paper filing. Feel free to contact any of K&K's trademark practitioners to discuss the method that is best suited to your needs.
