We have received reports that the "MAERSK HONAM", a 2017 built container vessel flying the Singaporean flag, has suffered a major explosion and fire on the 6th March. Four crew are reported missing.

We understand Smit are mobilising and Ardent, two major salvage companies. Other salvage assets are being mobilised. It is likely that there will be claims for salvage and GA as well as recovery of PA losses.

It is carrying a cargo loaded in various Asian ports and was bound for Europe.

If you would like assistance in dealing with any potential claims for salvage, GA and recovery of your losses, please do contact us.

This vessel is extremely large (it is of a similar size to the "MSC DANIELA", on which we represent the largest share of the cargo) and will involve a very considerable number of claims. It is about double the size of the "MOL COMFORT". As is well known, Maersk and MSC bills of lading provide for English law and jurisdiction and claims for LOF salvage would be subject to London arbitration.

We already are instructed for part of the cargo on board the vessel.

Our in-house master mariners are part of our service and their assistance, together with our extensive track record in marine matters (over 1,000 years of collective experience) are key resources in dealing with cases such as these.

This casualty notice is a free of charge service. If you feel a colleague would like a copy please do let us know.

Update – 7 March 2018

The fire appears to be intense and the vessel is about 400 miles off Socotra, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. All the crew have left the ship (four are still missing). Smit are mobilising salvage equipment and Lloyds Open Form was signed. More details are in the Maersk press release found here.

A fire expert has been retained. 7860 containers are on board and we already are receiving instructions from cargo insurers.

Maersk and the Salvors have already appointed London solicitors.

We will keep you updated, and if you insure cargo on board please do contact us.
