Thompson Hill Publishing, a telemarketing company based in
Montreal, pleaded guilty to making false or misleading
representations and engaging in deceptive telemarketing. An
investigation by the Competition Bureau found that the
company operated a scheme where its telemarketers would call
businesses and mislead them into thinking that they were due for a
renewal of an existing listing in the business directory, when in
fact the purpose of the call was to sell a new listing. Under the
corporate guilty plea, Thompson Hill also agreed to pay $180,000 in
fines and is banned from engaging in any telemarketing activities
for five years.
