The IRS has offered a package of administrative relief for taxpayers affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. For taxpayers covered by the relief, the IRS is postponing the deadlines for most income tax returns, income tax payments and other time-sensitive actions until Jan. 31, 2018. This includes partnership and S corporation returns due Sept. 15 and individual and corporate returns due Oct. 16.

In addition, the IRS will waive failure-to-deposit penalties for federal payroll and excise tax deposits for 15 days after the storms hit. The IRS determines eligibility for relief based on Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designations of counties that receive individual assistance, but the Service does have the authority to extend relief where it sees fit.
