Global law firm Clyde & Co has today announced that leading disputes lawyer, Nicholas Lum, will re-join our Shanghai office as a partner in December 2019.

Nicholas is a dispute resolution specialist with particular focus on international trade and commodities, shipping and shipbuilding and general commercial disputes. He will be joining from Ince, where he is a Partner of their Shanghai office, and formerly the Head of their Singapore office's China Practice Group. Nicholas had previously spent up to five years working in Clyde & Co's Shanghai office shortly upon its establishment in 2006.

Ik Wei Chong, Asia Managing Director, Clyde & Co, says:

"We are pleased to be welcoming Nicholas back to Clyde & Co as a partner, which speaks volumes of both our firm and culture. Nicholas will spearhead our cross-border dispute resolution efforts from our China offices, and spend significant time in Singapore, working with our team across South East Asia."

"Nicholas will further bolster our common-law capabilities in our China offices, while driving our outbound investment agenda under the Belt & Road Initiative and the Greater Bay Area," Mr Chong said.

"His deep understanding of the Chinese business environment and international background, combined with experience in international arbitration and complex cross-border litigation, further strengthen our offering in Asia," he added.

Nicholas is recommended and recognised as a leading lawyer in various legal publications, for example, "Disputes Star in arbitration" by Benchmark Asia Pacific and "someone understanding the China market very well" by Legal 500 Asia Pacific.

Nicholas' appointment follows a series of appointments, with leading marine lawyer Cornelia Kunze, Senior Associate, this year transferred to Singapore to lead the German desk. She specialises in contentious and non-contentious work, with an emphasis on commercial and dry shipping work.

The Singapore marine team has also welcomed Paul Collier, Senior Associate, who advises clients on contentious shipping and trade disputes. He joined this October and transferred from our London office.

Across Greater China and South East Asia, our marine team offers local law capabilities plus deep sector expertise.

Clyde & Co offers the largest marine practice worldwide, with over 150 lawyers across 46 offices. The marine group provides expertise to clients throughout the entire maritime industry: insurers, trading companies, owners, charterers, P&I clubs, shipbuilders, salvors, financial institutions, port authorities and governments.
