On April 10, 2024, the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) announced a financial close with Alexander First Nation, First Nation Power Development (FNpower) and Concord Green Energy on the upcoming Tilley Solar Project. This First Nation-led initiative will not only boost the economic interests of Alexander First Nation and FNpower, but also supports First Nation community ownership and participation in the renewable energy industry.
Recognizing the unique position of First Nations to drive economic reconciliation in the renewable energy industry, the CIB has committed $33 million to this large-scale energy project, which has a total cost of $52 million. This investment is expected to yield substantial returns for the community, enabling further economic development initiatives. Additionally, the Tilley Solar Project will create over 280 full-time jobs, fostering long-term socio-economic benefits for the First Nation and its partners.
Situated approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Calgary in Newell, Alta., on Treaty 7 Territory, the solar farm facility aims to enhance grid stability and reliability while making a meaningful impact on greenhouse gas emissions. It is projected to reduce Alberta's carbon footprint by nearly 14,200 tonnes annually.
