Insurers may be obliged in exceptional cases to pay above the limits stipulated in an insurance agreement, according to a Supreme Court ruling about civil liability pensions.

This may happen under article 357(1) of the Civil Code which stipulates that, in extraordinary circumstances, a court may modify the scope of the parties' performance.
